Word of the Month: SHINE!

SHINEto give forth or glow with light; shed or cast light.

to be bright with reflected light; glisten; sparkle.

noun – radiance or brightness caused by emitted or reflected light.

SHINE bright with us!

At The Dailey Method we SHINE for three weeks every Fall!

While the word SHINE has several meanings or implications, for me, there is one in particular that I work hard to instill within The Dailey Method. At TDM our mission is to empower others to be their best selves, to live their best lives and to shine from the inside – out. It’s a core value that we believe in and I personally do my best to show up lit up from the inside, everyday. It’s something I hope to inspire or call out in everyone I meet, as well. I feel it the most and thrive when given the opportunity to support positive body image and self confidence in people everywhere. No doubt this is one of the things people need most to shine their brightest.

I know I feel my own personal best when I “burn bright” from the inside. It makes me reflect on the idea that how we decide to show up in the world, in each and every moment, is as much for ourselves as it is for those with whom we run into, connect with or love. Shining from within feels amazing, but it takes focus, work and intention to accomplish.

Have you ever been sad and forced yourself to smile? I know that when I practice this simple action, I immediately feel a little better. I make an effort to truly see and smile at people as I’m moving throughout my life. I don’t always succeed, but I work hard and set my intention on showing up in this way. After all, who doesn’t want to receive a smile? They’re not always receptive 😂 but once I make a connection I see that I’ve literally, even if in a super small way, lit someone up.

Create a moment in your day where you make intentional eye contact and do so with a smile. Notice the reactions and decide to spread kindness remembering that it is fuel for everyone around you!

At TDM, the emphasis we place on the alignment of the bones and spine translates to feeling better, standing taller and off-setting aging (increasing longevity) in addition to helping to stave off disease. No better segway into our Align and SHINE challenge that provides you a platform of 21 days to consciously commit to yourself and to focus on you. This is an intentional time for you to make yourself a number one priority. And it doesn’t have to take a lot of time! All you commit to is the decision to schedule movement, meals and time for yourself. You can do this in a Studio or in your own home. Do it ANYWHERE! Click to find out more.

One of my favorite hashtags is #burnbrightdailey It’s a slogan we’ve used amongst our corporate and student communities for years. Looking back at it, I love how much it expresses not only who we are at TDM and what our culture is but also how have and continue to evolve.

And because I believe that the more we affirm ourselves the easier it is to shine, I want to share a couple of my favorite “thoughts of the day”:

  • Close your eyes and visit your greatest achievement to date. Allow your pride and gratitude to SHINE outwardly to assist you in life. You are AMAZING!!
  • Remember that there is a brilliance unique only to you and therefore is a special light only you get to share with our world. Shine bright today. The brighter you shine the more you can light up those around you.
  • You are enough. Exactly where you are and exactly who you are- right now.

Have fun and “Burn Your Brightest” all month long!

September Word of the Month : Conviction

“Strong convictions precede great actions.”
-James Freeman Clarke

Belief. It can oftentimes be more powerful than reality. It can even change, shift and influence reality. Though it is intangible, we can never underestimate what belief can do.

That is why in September at The Dailey Method we will focus on a more deeply-held belief – Conviction. When you start to do things with conviction and treat yourself as the remarkably capable being you are, you become just that…the remarkably capable being that you are.

Here are four simple ways to succeed with conviction this month:

Set Goals & Visualize What Success Feels Like. Yes, what success physically feels like. If you want to come out of September stronger, meditate on how you feel when you work hard, when you stay on track and when you give it your all…reminding yourself of that feeling is an extremely powerful visual tool.

Did you say Goals? Yes, that’s right. Not only set goals, but write them down, keep them front and center and rely on everything and everyone necessary to keep your beliefs strong. Re-confirm these goals with someone who will hold you accountable (which might happen to be the most blunt person you know. #toughlove.)

Self Compassion is More Helpful than Self Esteem  – A study at Berkeley conducted by Serena Chen suggests that those with self-compassion achieve better results than those who simply have a high self-esteem (though you should have both.) One of the reasons for the difference is that people with higher self-compassion tend to see their actions or weaknesses as something to be changed. In short – meet your missteps with the same determination as your goals – acknowledge them, learn from them and then power on with conviction.

Prepare for the Month AheadYes this requires conviction too! Be determined to set yourself up for success. This can mean a solid meal prep plan or mapping out your schedule so that your resolve is not tested. We have all been in that “How-am-I-going-to-squeeze-in-my-workout-today?” panic. Get ahead of the game, be strong and stick to the scheduling and structures that will make life easier.

Speaking of preparation, check out our next post as Align & Shine is just around the corner!!!

A New Method Move That Will Change Your Life Forever

We’ve all heard of the infamous Waterski… and we get our glorious glutes from the Fold-over… but have you ever heard of the “Lean In?”

This is the most important exercise yet.

The “Lean In” move is a practice in vulnerability which helps create deep and meaningful relationships. I know, I know – “But that sounds harder than Waterski!!!”

And just like Waterski, it may be hard in the moment, but it creates lasting results.

I’m sure it’s pretty safe to assume that one of the reasons you joined The Dailey Method was because of community. TDM is not just known for it’s effective workouts. It’s also known for it’s awesome events, continued education and retreats – all geared around community. In fact, most of the owners I know lovingly refer to their members as their tribe!

You plank together, back-dance together… and you may even drink wine together on occasion! But how well do you really know Sara in your 8:30am class?

Have you shared your fears?

Does she know your mantra?

Does she know what makes you LOL?

That is where The 30 Clean comes in. You see, it’s not really about food. It’s about being vulnerable. It’s about “Leaning In.”

So, while TDM has provided you with this amazing community of like-minded members, The 30 Clean is going to give you a chance to get to know everyone on a whole new level.

HOW DOES THE 30 CLEAN TAKE YOU TO YOU TO THAT NEXT LEVEL?

  • You and all of your TDM besties, friends, instructors and acquaintances are going to be grouped together in a private Facebook group. (Non-Facebook group options available via our Simple Start Program.)
  • We will be recipe sharing and photo journaling our meals. (And no… You don’t have to be a professional food stylist! #FiltersNotRequired)
  • Each day TDM and T30C will be posting Non-Food Challenges (NFC’s) that will have you putting yourself first, thinking deep about your life goals, laughing, crying and getting to know each other.
  • Between TDM’s team and our team you are going to get epic amounts of support and compassion. Remember, it’s about progress not perfection.

Now, who is ready to “Lean In?”

August Word of the Month : Capacity

“We cannot become what we want to be by remaining what we are.”

                                                                                                                – Max DePree

This month’s Word of the Month, Capacity, makes me think about pushing our limits; finding our own capacity and then stepping beyond that.

One definition of capacity is an individual’s mental or physical ability, aptitude or skill.

Each one of these words relates personally to me in regards to our Dailey Cycle program. I am a barre girl. I love barre classes. I feel my strongest and most graceful when I have a barre to hold onto. However, Dailey Cycle was a product that people wanted.

Owners, students, and our community wanted to have something that would give them a greater cardiovascular boost to increase their lung and heart strength. We developed a great product, I was proud of it and stood behind it. At the same time, I kept in the back of mind “this is not for me personally” or “I’m not a cardio girl”… “I’m not good at cycling.”

But alas, I am Jill Dailey. Should I really put my name on a product that I don’t own, or don’t participate in? Not if I strive to be authentic.

So about a year ago I started heading to Berkeley to take classes. OMG out of my comfort zone! I thought I was going to die. I had to hide in the back so no one would look at me or [even worse] try to follow me. I couldn’t keep up high RPMs and had to sit down quite a bit when we were cued to stand. But I persevered and increased my capacity as a result. A few months later I committed to adding the product into my Fairfax studio. I was hugely fortunate to have an enthusiastic, supportive and dedicated group of barre teachers that raised their hands to go through the training with me. While I did the build-out, we received the training and practiced and practiced and practiced some more. We were all good barre teachers but this was something completely new and pushed each one of our capacities in different ways. Mentally, physically, skill-wise and emotionally! I opened the doors in May and my community is embracing and loving the product.

Guess what? I now call myself a Dailey Cycle teacher. I can keep up with the cadence. Sometimes I still have to sit down when others are standing. But I’ll get in the front row and not worry about people following me – because we’re told to listen to our own bodies and do what’s necessary for ourselves not compete with our neighbors. So I do just that. And I LOVE it.

Inhale the future. Exhale the past.

The best part about of Dailey Cycle, and why it is so complementary to our other formats, is that you don’t have to sacrifice any of the core teachings of The Dailey Method® Barre classes. In fact, the core principles are just as important in Dailey Cycle, especially with the fast nature of the classes.

We always start with foundation and alignment on the bike, just like in our barre classes – by Aligning, Engaging, and Moving. We show you how to find your neutral spine position on a bike and remind you throughout class to go back there. We emphasize the back body support that is so integral to your well being and power on the bike. We teach you HOW to ride a bike which can help you be more successful anytime you jump onto a seat, whether it’s inside or outside.

What many people find surprising in a Dailey Cycle class is their own capacity to make it through their first time!  Luckily, TDM instructors load up the class with awesome music, creative, yet safe choreography, and different cadences to help you successfully improve speed, strength and aerobic ability. Almost immediately after incorporating a Cycle class into their week, TDM students talk about improved cardiovascular benefits. And let us not forget about the endorphins that only one class produces.

We first need to know our capacity, then we can exceed it!

How can you push yourself this month? How can you increase your capacity in one way or another? I’d love to hear!

We cannot become what we want to be by remaining what we are.

Here’s to making the uncomfortable, comfortable!

-Jill
