We incorporate at least one (if not more!) balancing poses into every TDM class and we do so for a reason. Because balance is really important! Of course it is important from a physical standpoint (and translates to other activities such as hiking, skiing, etc.) but balance in the body also helps with balance in the mind.
So while these tips are directed at finding balance during your Dailey Method Class, they also translate to finding balance in your life.
1. Find Foundation
In order to be balanced you need a strong foundation. You need to be grounded with whatever is below you. If you are balancing while standing, finding your foot foundation is an important starting point – so that all four corners of your feet are evenly rooted down. If you are standing on your hands, find proper hand foundation.
2. Focus on Your Breath
Bringing your focus to your breath helps with balance because it allows you to slow down, to calm down and to bring awareness to where you are in that moment. It’s interesting because breath happens without us asking it to, but it is also something that we can control – and when we do, the benefits for both the mind and body are incredible.
3. Find a Focal Point
Looking at a single point of focus is key in finding balance. Because just like finding the breath, it brings focus and intention to whatever it is that you are doing. It’s important to also look at a point that is not moving (not in the mirror). And because we care so much about alignment at The Dailey Method, you also want to find a point that keeps your cervical spine neutral. Depending on your build, this tends to be about 3-4 feet in front of you.
4. Let go of Distractions or Effort – Be Present!
Slow the mind and you will balance better. That’s the point of focusing on the breath and the focal point. The more you can be here and now, the better you’ll be able to balance. If you are worried about falling, you’ll likely fall. If you are saying “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I’m holding this!” it also brings you out of the moment (but you deserve a big cheer after). It’s what makes balancing poses one of the hardest parts of class! It’s an ongoing practice to just ‘be’.
5. Accept Imperfection
Know that you learn and grow from every fall. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t do it, even if you normally can! It’s a practice. Everyday is a new day, everyday we have a slightly different presence of mind and that’s why The Dailey Method is valuable on a ‘dailey’ basis. The different positions challenge you in different ways on different days. Just keep going.
Here’s to becoming more balanced today!
