As the warm weather approaches and summer plans start filling up our calendars, it’s easy to let fitness routines fall by the wayside. I promise though, with a bit of creativity and dedication, you can maintain your barre practice from the comfort of your own home (or vacation/travel spot). Side note- I always refer to both because we all know that usually travel with kids isn’t vacation! The flexibility of having a space to practice outside of the studio empowers you to stay consistent with your practice, no matter where your summer adventures take you.
- Designate a Space: Start by carving out a dedicated area in your home or summer ideally there’s a railing to use as a barre. It also could be a corner of your living room, a spare bedroom, or even just a cleared-out spot in your garage, barre is truly adaptable to any space. Prioritize finding someplace where you are removed from distractions, no visible laundry or dirty dishes and ideally with your phone turned off. This dedicated space will help you stay focused and motivated during your practice no matter what amount of time you’re able to commit.
- Gather Your Equipment: While you don’t need much equipment to practice barre at home, having a few key items can enhance your experience. A railing, sturdy chair or countertop can be utilized for a makeshift barre, a yoga mat will be helpful for added comfort during floor exercises, and remember your grippy socks for foundation and stability. You always have the option of adding weights, a ball or resistance bands, but you can easily modify your workout without them.
- Set a Schedule: Summer brings a more relaxed schedule, and you can still prioritize your self care. It’s supportive to set aside specific times each day for your workouts and treat them like any other important appointment, put them in your calendar. One of the best things about barre is that it’s designed to work your entire body throughout, so even if you can only carve out 15 or 20 minutes you’ll still get a full body workout. Whether it’s first thing in the morning before the day gets busy or in the evening after the kids are in bed, find a time that works for you and commit to it.
